New in version 1.2
------------------
- Added backspace/erase buttons to enable a mouse-only work-
flow.
- Now responds to the Backspace and Del keys.
- Added an Edit menu.
What is Character Map?
----------------------
This is a utility that lets you browse the character set on
your Amiga, see the code and official name (according to the
ECMA-94 standard) of any character, as well as the keyboard
combination required to type it. You can also copy charac-
ters to the system clipboard.
Character Map is more than a little inspired by a utility of
the same name that has been shipped with various versions of
the Windows operating system for more than 30 years. Similar
utilities can be found on other systems as well.
Note that Character Map assumes that the character set in
use is Latin Alphabet No. 1 as defined by Standard ECMA-94
(2nd Edition), since this was the only character set used by
Amigas throughout releases 1.2 to 3.1. If your Amiga uses
some other character set, the character names displayed may
be incorrect.
Character Map requires Kickstart 2 or later.
Full source code is included. Please read the HowToBuild
file before attempting to build the project!
Mouse operation
---------------
Click on a character to select it. This will display its
code, name and keyboard combination.
Double click a character to append it to the string in the
string input. Alternatively, click the "Append" button to
append the currently selected character.
Click the "Copy" button to copy the content of the string
input to the system clipboard. You should then be able to
paste that string into a Shell window or any tool that uses
the system clipboard.
Click the "<" button to delete the last character from the
string input. Clicking the "×" button will clear the string
input. This does NOT copy the string to the clipboard.
Keyboard operation
------------------
Navigate characters using the cursor keys. Press the Enter
key to append the current character to the string input.
The Backspace key will delete the last character and the
Del key will clear the string input.
You also have keyboard shortcuts for the buttons, as indi-
cated by the underscored characters, plus the usual menu
shortcut keys for Cut, Copy and Paste.
Note that pressing the shortcut key for the string input
activates it, and while it is activated, it will take over
the keyboard. Press Enter to deactivate it and resume normal
operation.
Menu functions
--------------
The Edit contains the usual Cut, Copy, Paste and Erase func-
tions. Each operate on the content of the string input in
its entirety.
Miscellaneous
-------------
Thanks go to Samir Hawamdeh for the Italian translation and
to Stefan Haubenthal for the German translation.
